Sick of stockpiling food that expires on you? Wish there were foods that could last a decade or two, or even go so far as to outlive you?
Well, I’m happy to say, these kinds of foods do exist. While they’re few in number, foods that have extreme long-term expiration dates can really help you boost your food stockpile preps.
You can put ’em in the back of your pantry and forget ’em. Some may change taste and/or texture, but they’ll still be completely edible when you get around to needing them the most.
While you should practice FIFO or rotation in your food storage, some things can last forever.
Use this list to make your food stockpile checklist and you’ll be saving money in the long run. No more throwing out unopened cans because they’re a year or two past expiration.
The Dry Guys
- Maple Syrup
- Corn Syrup
- Dried Cranberries
Seasonings and Powders
- Banking Soda
- Flavor Extracts
These foods are paramount to a well-tailored food storage program. Be sure that you have things like this in your own pantry as it can make all the difference.
Moreover, be sure that you learn how to use these ingredients. That is the only caveat with these long term food storage items. These items will be there when you need them but you don’t want to be eating molasses out of the jar with a spoon.
Salt and sugar can be used for drying and curing foods. You have to get to know the power in these base ingredients.
You might also consider these lifelong ingredients as something to stockpile for the barter. Having barter items that last forever is a great prepper advantage!
Bonus: How to Make Pemmican, the Original Survival Food
Invented by the natives of North America pemmican was used by Indian scouts as well as early western explorers.
Native Americans spent a great deal of time on the go and depended on having portable, high-energy, highly nutritious, and filling foods that would last for long periods of time without refrigeration.
Pemmican is a portable, long-lasting, high-energy food. It’s made of lean, dried meat that’s crushed into powder and mixed with hot, rendered fat. This makes it one of the ultimate foods to have stockpiled for when SHTF or disaster strikes.
People really should avert their gaze from the modern survival thinking for just a bit and also look at how folks 150 years ago did it.
These guys were the last generation to practice basic things, for a living, that we call “survival skills” now.
