With the holidays creeping up it’s time to get crafty. Flower arrangements make great decorations and centerpieces, but why use an ordinary vase? Use more of the outdoors and craft a vase made of sticks right from your garden. It will bring a rustic charm to this year’s holiday table.
What is a Twig Vase?
A vase doesn’t have to be glass or ceramic. A vase made of materials you can find in your backyard is more interesting, more natural, and helps use up what you have on hand. A twig vase is simply a vase made out of small sticks from your garden.
Twig covered vases can potentially look sloppy or too much like a craft project, but if you take some time to do it right, this is a great fall and winter centerpiece. Fill it with seasonal flowers, branches, and autumn leaves for a more natural decoration.
How to Make a Twig Vase
The secret to making a great twig vase that is sturdy, even, and looks nice is to start with a good base. Use any cylindrical vase as the starting point, whether it’s glass or any other material. You can even use something else, like an empty coffee can. The cylindrical shape is important because it’s difficult to fit twigs to any other shape. From there, the rest is easy:
- Collect twigs. Twig branches for vase crafting can be any type you want but avoid any branches that are too thick. All the twigs should be about the same circumference.
- Cut to size. Based on the size of the vase, cut the twigs down to size. If they are all the same length, you’ll have an even top on the vase. Cut different lengths for varied heights around the top edge. Make sure each twig is straight or it will be difficult to line them up and avoid gaps.
- Glue the twigs in place. With a hot glue gun, apply a line of glue from top to bottom on the vase and press a twig into place. Continue around the edge of the vase. Put rubber bands around the vase as it dries to help hold everything in place. Remove them when you’re ready to use the vase.
Add a ribbon. You can leave the vase as just twigs, but a ribbon around the middle adds some extra flair. Use raffia or an orange ribbon for an autumn or Halloween theme and change it out for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
